I'm in the very early stages of planning an alpine tour for 2015, probably the last 2 weeks in july. Going over Gross Glockner, Tremola, Grimsel, Stelvio plus a few others. I'll be going as far east as Venice and staying in that area for a couple of days with a visit to Sirmione at the bottom of Lake Garda too.

Anyone want to come along???? Anyone have any tips?? i.e good hotels, routes etc - i have a lot of routes already, just need to string them together in Basecamp and work out daily mileages for hotels etc.

Dates are not set in stone apart from the first 2 weeks of July are off the table - so go on you know you want to, I usually use the Dover - Calais route cos it's way cheaper than the ripoff tunnel plus you get a rest and and a cuppa too.

However this trip will be 14 days so at the end of day 6, we'll be dropping down to somewhere near Verona/Padova for 2-3 days and then pick up the return route following on from day 7


Grossglockner tour

Calais to Reims via Cambrai, Guise and Montcornet

Reims to Mulhouse via St Dizier, Epinal and the Vosges

Mulhouse to Chur via Lucerne, Meiringen and Grimselpass

Chur to Bolzano via Fluelapass and Stelvio

Bolzano to Grossglockner, via the Dolomites

Grossglockner to Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Gerlos Pass and Achensee

Stay 2 - 3 days near Verona (not decided yet, needs research)

Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Baden-Baden via Immenstadt, Friedrichshafen and the Black Forest

Baden-Baden to Charleville-Meziers via the Vosges and the Ardennes

Charleville-Meziers to Calais via Hirson, Guise and Cambrai

Fekk me that looks good. Unfortunately, unless my wife wins the lottery and decides to fekk off, plus my tiny little 25 and 20 year old kids find alternative accommodation and an alternative source of income then I'm fooked.

I'm all on to get 2 fekkin nights in Clun.

Been to Switzerland many times, recommend andermat as a good place to stay as it sits on a plane surrounded by four great alpine passes, grimsel and furka are brilliant.

Be great if you could make it, i've got John Hermanns book which recommends Andermatt too but if you look at the route on day 3 you'll see it goes there anyway, could spend a night there and do the oberalp the next day.

I've not set any dates yet but i'm thinking the last 2 weeks of july, that way it's pretty much guaranteed all the passes will be open and it's before the main holiday rush in August. What do you think???? Got over a year to plan this so it should be epic

Looking at the routes in Basecamp i'm thinking of doing it in the reverse order, that way the trip around venice,Garda,Sirmione is more or less on the way

Superb I'm going to leave the ferry booking until around April in case anyone else wants to come

small update - Still have to meet up with Grant but I'm intending to book only 1 hotel at the furthest easterly point, i.e Lake Garda. That way daily mileages can be varied depending on weather, traffic, mood etc and you're not rushing to get to a particular hotel.

That's the idea, you only live once so get off your backside and JUST DO IT, they don't allow zimmer frames in the alps so you'd best get a wriggle on

To add further temptation the route skirts along Lake Resia in South Tyrol.............see the road on the far right
The lake is famous for the steeple of a submerged 14th-century church; when the water freezes, this can be reached on foot

me an KP (prob couple others as well ) aimin to do eastern france /alps an over into Switzerland end june/first week july so wont be able to make it ;plus as its karens first euro bike trip don't want to go to far for her;but sounds good;if dates things change will let you know......just got to fig out how were gonna afford it ;house move has killed the money but that's what credit cards are for

Daz , Ive just been having a quick look at those routes again and it just reminded me of something you need to check...

When we were there a couple of three years back it was on and around the same dates as you.. The whole of Italy take their annual Holidays at
the same time and trust me mate you cannot shift for them.. they flock there in their swarms and you cannot get a bed for love or money.
3 weeks I believe... All along the coast in the south of France as well ... They just jump in the car and drive up

Total chaos one day and the next they were all gone like the flick of a switch....

just an heads up mate if your thinking of going on spec
